150th

150th

As planning for the 150th progresses throughout the winter months, it is exciting to look ahead to warmer weather and all the activities that will be taking place in the Gardens. This celebration will include groups, organizations and individuals showcasing the arts and cultures of our community.

The Friends of the Public Gardens (TFPG) will be communicating with you this year to keep you informed and engaged in making this a truly festive anniversary.

Season long celebrations including a Birthday Party  – With support from HRM and Canadian Heritage, and working with volunteers and partners, 150 events and activities will take place within the Gardens this year.  Some may be repeated, such as a rotation of artists, and some may overlap with several events on the same day. There will also be special attractions to mark distinctive days such as the Victoria Day Tea on May 22;  Garden Days, June 14-17 – a Canada wide event; Dahlia Days, an annual event; Canada’s 150 Celebration on July 1st ; and the Mayor’s Garden Party on Natal Day, August 7th. A special Jarvis Lecture with Tony Kirkham from Kew Gardens, London, England, will take place on June 28th.  A Birthday Party for the Gardens will offer a day-long celebration of the sesquicentennial on Saturday, June 10th.   Mark your calendars!

To accomplish these goals, we need a little help from our Friends!  Please get in touch if:

  • You are a local performer, or you can recommend local performers (choirs, dancers, musicians)
  • You could sponsor, or recommend a sponsor to help with events, supplies and equipment
  • You are able to volunteer some time to help with an event or organize an activity

Paint the Gardens

To celebrate this special year, the Friends of the Public Gardens (TFPG) will bring the Gardens alive with events and activities between May and November.  The celebration will involve Nova Scotia groups, organizations and individuals showcasing the arts and cultures of our community.

With this goal in mind, we are extending an invitation to Nova Scotia artists to “Paint the Gardens”.  Selected Saturdays from mid-June to mid-September will be set aside for this purpose. Art Groups and individual artists will be invited to select one of the dates, bring your easels, pick your sites, and be inspired by the historic statues, fountains, bandstand, architecture, gates or the beautiful flowers, trees, ponds and life within the Public Gardens.

Please share this invitation and consider participating.  Full information and registration form will be available in mid-April.
