Friends of the Public Gardens - Our Heritage

The Gardens were designated as a National Historic Site in 1984. The Friends of the Public Gardens, a non-profit organization, incorporated as a society in 1984 is dedicated to the preservation, enhancement and protection of the Public Gardens for the continued enjoyment of everyone.

What We Do

The Friends' will continue to:

  • inform the public of the Public Gardens by publishing/promoting books and materials on the Public Gardens, newsletters for members and maintaining website for public information and input
  • represent the public of potential /actual adverse activity/inactivity impinging on the Public Gardens; example;  Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia,Friends of the Public Gardens vs N.S.Utility and Review Board Brenhold Limited,City of Halifax February 2,1994 C.A.94-06254
  • promote public access to the Gardens through passage of the Public Gardens Protection Act
  • preserve for the public record Public Gardens material, videos, photos, memorabilia for FPG archive and website
  • assist the public and researchers eg the retrieval of the history of the pre-Confederation lodge which resulted in a long term plan for stabilization and restoration of the same;
  • arrange tours for the public
  • encourage public interest in the Public Gardens eg.promote the Gardens to national "Communities in Bloom",pesticide-free gardening practices of the HRM
  • Published books,postcards and maps on the Public Gardens,eg.The Halifax Public Gardens(1989);The Lost Patrol(1994),newsletters & website for members to inform of current events, history and activities relating to the Gardens
  • Liasion with public participation organizations in garden,and heritage interests here and internationally eg:the restoration campaign for Victoria Park (opposite the Public Gardens) which was coordinated with Spring Garden Area Business Association,Ecology Action Centre,The Scots,Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia and Metro Food Bank.
