The FPG financed the
publication of a revised and full-color expanded version of the Gardens
pictorial Guide book and map in 2008. It had been a long time coming and thanks
to many contributors and supporters, the contents are a delight to all
who have more than a passing interest in what is planted in the
ground.
The book features the history of
the Gardens, a fascinating community asset which plays such an important part in
the region’s tourism business. Many local botanists,
historians, writers, photographers, designers and proof readers volunteered their time to see the project completed.
The whole idea was to
reissue the popular guide first published by the Friends in 1986. One problem was that much of the Gardens refurbishment, which took place
after Hurricane Juan, had to be documented and photographed,
including any changes which had taken place naturally.
The Gardens are more
than an open space, they are an example of a formal Victorian public
garden surviving intact and relatively unspoiled in the heart of a
modern city. Our thanks go the the following organizations and
individuals whose financial contributions helped to make the
new publication possible:
Ambassatours Gray
Line Inc., Baden Maritime Forces Pacific Band, Cabrita Family, Craig
Foundation, Domus Realty, Downtown Halifax Business Commission, Judith
Fingard, Dorothy Grantmyre, Halifax Regional Municipality, Halifax Seed Inc., Lord Nelson Hotel, Lucky Girl
Productions in support of the Halifax Public Gardens staff, Probus
Halifax, Realstar Property Management, Spring Garden Area Business
Association, Peta-Jane Temple, Dulcie Conrad, Tourism Industry of Nova Scotia, Lyndon Watkins and Alan Ruffman.
Councillor Russell
Walker (District 15 Fairview-Clayton Park), joined his colleagues from
the Peninsula Community Council in making a donation from their
respective District Activity Funds on behalf of their citizens. In addition to Councillor Walker, these included Councillors Sue
Uteck (District 13 Northwest Arm - South End), Sheila Fougere (District
14 Connaught-Quinpool Road), Dawn Sloane (District 12 Halifax Downtown), and Patrick Murphy (District 11 North End). The society is grateful for
this support and encouragement.
Several of our councillors have personal links and fond memories of the
Gardens. Councillor Murphy used to lead visitors through the Gardens
while working as a tour guide and former Councillor Fougere was a big Gardens
promoter when she worked in the conference and marketing sector.
