In advance of our event on May 19, here’s a brief refresher on the reasons behind this special day. Victoria Day is a Canadian holiday that celebrates Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 until her death in 1901. After her death, Victoria Day was established as a legal holiday by the Canadian Parliament. Queen Victoria played a key role in the formation and early development of Canada through her support for Confederation. She granted royal assent to the British North America Act, which created the Dominion of Canada in 1867, establishing this country as a self-governing entity. She met with the Fathers of Confederation during this process and was known in some circles as the Mother of Confederation. What you may not know is that she never personally visited Canada. That said, her cultural values influenced Canadian society – and we’ll be pleased to have a spot of tea with you to celebrate her birth!
